Definition of capacitance or capacitor

Capacitance is the ability of a device to store an electric charge.

An electric motor capacitor is a device that start stores, and then releases an electrical charge to aid start an electrical motor (starting capacitor) or to keep information technology spinning (run capacitor) - the electrical charge or potential free energy stored in the capacitor is used to give a ability heave to the motor to assist information technology overcome inertia - to start rotating.

The college a capacitance or µF, the greater the total voltage charge that will exist accumulated then released by the capacitor to give the motor a "kick" to start information technology rotating.

Types of Motor Capacitors

Before trying to replace a capacitor, you lot should know that some motors utilize a combined outset/run capacitor and others don't apply a start or run capacitor at all.

Individual Starting time & Run Capacitors

A start capacitor is used to give the motor a kick to become information technology moving and a split up run capacitor keeps it spinning smoothly.

Combined beginning/run capacitor

A start/run capacitor combines the start capacitor and run capacitor functions in a single device. These caps will have three electric terminals:

South = start wire connector

R = Run wire connector

C = mutual connector

So if your electric motor has only one physical capacitor, it might be a model that combines both get-go and run features. You can tell this by examining the terminals marked on the capacitor. It will have both S and R equally well equally a C terminal.

Dual capacitor

A dual capacitor - combines two physical capacitors within of a unmarried concrete device, one to run a higher-amperage motor such equally the compressor in an air conditioner compressor/condenser unit of measurement, and a second smaller capacitor to run a smaller motor such as the cooling fan motor in the compressor/condenser unit of measurement.

Where is the capacitor?

If you tin't find the capacitor,

see LOCATE the STARTING CAPACITOR,

Some motors don't use capacitors or use but a run capacitor

Lookout out: not all electric motors, such as pool pumps, use starting or run capacitors.

For example a split up-stage motor, frequently used in spas and hot tubs and at many above-footing swimming pools, uses a start switch and starts winding but does not use a starting nor a run capacitor.

A "permanent separate capacitor" motor uses a run capacitor simply not a starting capacitor. Motors of this design, often found in in-ground swimming pool pumps, have a low starting torque and need just a run cap.

ECM motors use an electronic control module to operate the motor and may not use a start or run capacitor. Those motors are described

at ECM MOTOR CAUSING CIRCUIT BREAKER Fizz

How practice y'all know that an electric motor needs a replacement STARTING or RUN capacitor?

There are 3 bad capacitor cases.

  1. Bad start capacitor
  2. Bad run capacitor
  3. Visible damage to either type of capacitor, for example: bulged.

1. Bad Starting time Capacitor

If the electric motor hums without starting or has trouble starting, but volition run if given a push (e.chiliad. a spin of a fan blade - watch out for chopped-off fingers) the Starting time cap is probably bad.

If the motor hums and does not commencement to rotate and the thermal overload protection switch has not tripped, then the Beginning cap is probably bad.

2. Bad Run Capacitor

If the electric motor draws high current when running, the RUN cap may exist bad. In that location are other causes such as bad motor bearing or overloaded motor.

In sum a failing motor may be hard to start, merely because changing the cap is so cheap compared with replacing the motor, often the tech will try a new showtime cap start to come across if she tin get more life out of the motor before replacing it. See details at HARD STARTING ELECTRIC MOTOR CAUSES

See also CAPACITORS for HARD STARTING MOTORS

Watch out: If EITHER the STARTING capacitor or RUN capacitor is bulged, burned, has a hole in it, or has leaked oil, it is shot and needs replacement.

3. Damaged Capacitor Examples

Outburst or Diddled capacitor:

A "catastrophic capacitor failure" of a motor starting capacitor is 1 in which the start capacitor literally "explodes" or bursts.

This happens when the start capacitor remained engaged too long - peradventure because a centrifugal switch inside the motor did not undo the starting cap circuit when it should have.

Details are at Electric MOTOR CENTRIFUGAL SWITCH or PTC PRD

Spotter out: Exposing a capacitor to voltage much above its rated voltage input might besides cause a capacitor to explode.

Blistered or Bulged capacitor:

This capacitor failure is similar to but non as dramatic as a blown capacitor but here too, if you see a bulge or blister or rupture or burst opening on your capacitor, the cap has failed and needs to exist replaced.

Subconscious internal harm:

of a starting capacitor is shown as lost capacitance that can occur due simply to crumbling or "wear" from long service. An electrical test of the capacitor can reveal this failure.

How to Choose a Replacement Motor Capacitor - 4 Methods

AO Smith or other motor replacement capacitor 25MFD 370V - 628318-307 - at InspectApedia.comThe all-time pick if you are replacing a starting capacitor or a showtime/run capacitor is to lucifer the existing device on your system.

That means noting the information printed on the existing capacitor - if it'south legible and matching that.

Our capacitor tables given above in this article also provide general communication on matching a motor capacitor to the motor voltage and size ratings in Volts and kW or kilowatts.

[Click to enlarge whatever epitome]

Our photograph here illustrates a Mars-brand starting capacitor rated at 25uF and 370VAC - this cap is used ion AO Smith motors and is identified as 25MFD 370V - 628318-307. (MFD = microfarads)

Since in that location are just two terminals we know this isn't a start+run capacitor.

How to Match a Replacement Capacitor for an Electric Motor

Options for matching a replacement motor capacitor include the following

  1. Examine the original capacitor and lucifer its ratings in Voltage and and capacitance, uF or micro farads.

    Look for and record all of the markings on the capacitor.

    Typically you'll encounter a rating in microfarads similar the 25uF in our capacitor photo above, and yous'll as well see a voltage range rating such as the 370VAC (maximum voltage) rating besides in the red circumvolve of our photograph above.

    For help decoding the markings on your capacitor, see

    CAPACITOR CODE & MARKING DECODING GUIDE

  2. Take the capacitor or the whole electrical motor to a motor rebuild-shop or to your local electrical supplier

    If the capacitor markings are legible, they'll be able to friction match it.

    If the capacitor markings are not legible the electrical supplier or motor rebuilder will recommend a start, run, or combination capacitor based on the motor data tag information.

What if the Capacitor is Lost or Has No Legible Markings?

With the motor brand and model (and hopefully series number in hand) you can besides get the exact OEM part number - contact the motor manufacturer. They can give you the verbal OEM capacitor replacement role number or specifications.

Motor data tag for an AO Smith electric motor (C) InspectApedia.com

  1. Check the motor type & motor part number and information tag specifications and use a motor function exchange or OEM role catalog.

    Come across capacitor and motor repair role catalogs given

    at ELECTRIC MOTOR CAPACITOR CATALOGS

    For readers whose capacitor has no markings whatsoever, your electrical supplier volition desire to know the technical details almost the capacitor'due south intended employ. Those tin be found on the motor data tags for the motor served by the cap.

    Typical pool/spa motor capacitors: some pool pumps use a motor that gets a kickoff-upwardly boost from a starting capacitor.

    For case a typical aboveground puddle, hot tub or spa motor will use a

    starting capacitor rated around 50-400 MFD and 125 or 250 VAC.

    And for the same motor, the run capacitor will be rated around 15-50 MFD and 370 VAC.

    Capacitor Capacitance Value Limits - MicroFarads

    Select a replacement capacitor whose capacitance value in µF, (micro-farads) typically expressed as a range such as thirty µF - 50 µF matches the original capacitor and/or the data tag on your electric motor.

    Capacitor Voltage Rating Selection Limits

    The voltage rating of a capacitor indicates the highest nominal voltage at which it is designed to operate.

    Use of a capacitor at voltages

    below

    its rating will do no harm. For example, if your motor used a 370VAC rated capacitor you tin can supersede it with a 370 or a 440VAC capacitor. The 440VAC capacitor will last longer.

    But because these voltage ratings are simply the pinnacle voltage that the capacitor can handle, using a higher-rated cap (440) where a lower-rated one (370) was originally installed, is non harmful.

    Run capacitors must not exist subject to voltages exceeding 10 pct of the nominal rating, and start capacitors must not be subjected to voltages exceeding 30 percent of the nominal rating.

    Watch out: The voltage to which a capacitor is subjected is not line voltage, but is a much higher potential (often called back electromotive strength or dorsum EMF) which is generated in the showtime winding. On a typical 230 volt motor, the generated voltage may exist as high as 400 volts and is adamant by the start winding characteristics, the compressor speed, and the practical voltage.

    [PDF] p. A-nine

  2. Choose a capacitor based on Electric Motor Type, Motor Horsepower, Motor Kw or Kilowatt rating, or Frequency (Hz)Near capacitors will be rated and marked as 50/sixty Hz significant that the capacitor can run at either Hz or frequency. Just do not utilize a cap marked ONLY as a 50Hz on a 60Hz circuit and vice versa.

    If you cannot detect whatever data giving the motor'southward make, model, specifications, and you lot have no markings nor even the actual old start/run capacitor from an electrical motor, yous might get into the correct ballpark by choosing a capacitor based on the motor's horsepower and voltage and awarding.

    If you lot don't even have that information, we're stuck. Take the motor to an electrical motor repair proficient who might find markings y'all missed.

What if the Motor has No Data Tag? Ballpark Kickoff-Run Capacitor Values

If the motor has no legible markings nor data tag, first check again. Some electric motors such equally oil burner motors accept data stamped right into the metal casing of the motor itself. The information may exist there only only visible under good lighting.

In general, starting capacitors for electrical motors will exist in the range of 50 - 1200 µF and will be rated for voltages of 110/125, 165, 220/250 or 330 VAC and will exist labeled as functioning at 50Hz or 60Hz.

Near capacitors use a 1/4" apartment bladed push button-terminal connector with ii terminals per post.

Run capacitors may take 3-4 terminals per post.

While most starting capacitors article of clothing a round case, some are oval in design: the shape does not impact the capacitor'south function but the capacitor's shape might bear upon its power to fit into the original capacitor's location or case on your equipment or motor.

Watch out: as a general rule of pollex, electric motor first capacitors tin be replaced with a micro-farad or µF or mfd rating equal to or up to twenty% higher µF than the original capacitor serving the motor. On the replacement capacitor the voltage rating must be equal to or greater than the original.

Watch out: exercise not affect an electric motor capacitor nor any other electrical components before yous have removed electric ability and SAFELY discharged the capacitor or you lot tin can go a serious stupor or injury.

If your electric motor truly has no legible information nigh its specifications and so you lot might consider these very basic capacitor ranges that tin get a small electric motor running again:

Notes to the tables to a higher place

1. Watch out: these are only "ballpark guesstimates" - check with the manufacturer of your specific motor and application.

For case among the motor type "pool pump" horsepower range may mean different capacitor values.

If your capacitors burn out chop-chop at that place are several common reasons: wrong capacitor size (besides small), motor is damaged, or mis-wiring.

Capacitor Ratings in Farads or micro-Farads µF and Voltage VAC

Round starting capacitor 35 microfarads (C) InspectApedia.com RobertCapacitor energy ratings are expressed in farads - the amount of electric power stored in the capacitor, where µF or µF = microfarad (x-half dozen farads) and is the same as mfd (microfarads) written in other references.

Rated capacitance for a capacitor is the capacitance value (electrical energy storage value) for which the capacitor is designed.

The rated capacitance has to exist sufficient to requite the energy heave or kick to the electric motor to start information technology spinning (a start capacitor) or to help continue information technology spinning (run capacitor).

Capacitors are also rated for the voltage range in which the capacitor tin safely operate, such equally 220V or 440V.

The starting capacitor photo shown here, provided 2018-07-10 past reader Robert, is marked as rated 35 +5 uF 440V 60Hz.

That's 35 microfarads +5% and is the capacitor rating, along with voltage, that the reader will need to specify when buying a replacement.

We likewise see a specific part number: SH 8720 1238 80-197, only in replacing this capacitor you'd nourish first to the rated capacitance and voltage.

[Click to enlarge any paradigm]

Rated voltage for a capacitor is defined as the highest continuous voltage that can be applied to the capacitor at its rated temperature without impairment.

Depending on the application, the micro-farad range of starting capacitors varies according to the motor size. For case you can't sub a 110V-rated capacitor into a 220V arrangement.

Start capacitors typically range from 20-30 µF up to 250-300 µF. The example capacitor charts at the commencement of this article are adjusted from AFCAP. [2]

The voltage range for a first-up capacitor typically ranges from 250VAC to 450VAC.

Watch out: When you are replacing an electric motor capacitor, never put in a lower rated capacitor. If you cannot go an exact size match to the original motor capacitor, it is acceptable to use a capacitor rated i step college in µF. The substitute capacitor must be able to handle the voltage.

Run capacitors typically range in micro-farads from 1.5 to 50µF. or 50 microfarads or MFDs.

Run capacitor, rated at 7.5 microfarads (C) InspectApedia.com RobertRobert'southward run capacitor shown here is rated at 7.5 µF +/- 5%, 370 Volts, and 50/60Hz or cycles.

The cap also sports its part number.

You can also check a capacitor to compare its functioning with its microfarad rating past using an ohmmeter. In a working capacitor, ohms volition build-up and and so fall off (when the capacitor discharges).

Details of that procedure are

at Exam a MOTOR START or RUN CAPACITOR

HVAC suppliers sell general-use starting capacitors that are intended for use across a range of electrical motors and motor sizes.

But at to the lowest degree some industry sources (Sealed Unit of measurement Parts Company or Supco) make a more than conscientious statement explaining that it'due south all-time not to install a significantly oversized starting capacitor on an electric motor.

According to Supco, [quoting]

If the outset capacitor is too large for the awarding, the capacitor can actually mask the adult voltage in the start windings and keep the start capacitor in the circuit continuously. .... The ... run-start voltage is suppressed below the trigger voltage of the start device. Equally a result, the beginning capacitor remains in the circuit as the motor runs.

A secondary, fail-safe method is necessary to ensure that the start device is ultimately removed from the circuit.

... A outset device that fails to remove the outset capacitor from the excursion has the potential to cause premature failure of the beginning windings in the compressor. ... If the capacitor is never removed from the showtime windings, premature winding failure could occur. Every bit such, care should be taken when selecting capacitor sizes for an application.

Care should too be taken regarding products that tout a "bigger capacitor is ameliorate" approach to compressor starting. SUPCO Due east-Class devices provide a secondary timing safety device to ensure that the start capacitor is dropped from the excursion in a neglect-condom mode.

Sure, merely have a wait at the capacitor selection guide above and you lot'll see that in that location are several ways that y'all can make a reasonable guess at what capacitor you need. You'll too see that you can apply a close match; it doesn't accept to exist an exact match.

Having difficulty finding this capacitor for my old motorcar elevator it is a 2 mail service screw lift rated at 6,000 LBS has somewhere between a i/2hp to a 2or 3 HP motor a chain runs underneath that keeps the two posts in sync runs on 240v one phase. Can anyone help

@Aiman,

Wait at the specifications on the motor information tag.

I am just kickoff to learn about Refegerators/Freezers. There seems to be some Markings/Numbers on the start Capacitors other than Capacitance(uF), &, Voltage. For example, there are some numbers similar this "25/70/21 PO". I am not sure what these numbers hateful? Likewise, some Capacitors take more than one Voltage ratings(h/cl.b & h/cl.c). As an example, hither is a link for a showtime Capacitor listed on ebay;

@Mac,

Above on this very page you'll find tables and suggestions for sizing motor capacitors based on motor size (1/5hp in your case) and type. Delight take a await and allow me know if that leaves y'all with questions.

I accept a air handler fan motor that is needing a new capacitor. The markings are not legible for mf. The motor size is 1/5 hp. Any help is appreciated.

@Peter,

I think at this betoken our best bet is to take a guess using the capacitor size tabular array versus motor horsepower given in the article above.

I've an old Crompton Parkinson motor on an air compressor and the capacitor seems to accept packed it in. I've attached a photo of it but equally you can see the specs are unreadable. Looks similar it has a max of 150 F? The specs on the motor are Model PA9342Q-P-M running at 50Hz ane.5HP Class E Amps seven.eight nine.0 240v. Could you propose delight? Peter

@david carson,

Our electrical motor starting capactor sizing tables don't address much higher horsepower motors similar your 20HP motor;

First, are you sure that your motor uses a starting cap?

2nd: have you checked the specifications on the motor's data tag or in its IO transmission?

Alternatively sciencing.com offers this formula that nosotros've not confirmed

"Multiply 0.5 times the square of the voltage. Call this result "ten.". Standing the case, you have 0.five times 11.5 volts times 11.5 volts, or 66.1 square volts for "x". Divide the start-up energy requirement, in joules, of the motor past "10" to arrive at the capacitor size needed in farads."

I have a twenty horse motor what starting capacitor did I need and how much

DAYTON 2MEL2 Round Motor Start Capacitor,53-64 Microfarad Rating, 330VAC Voltage Cited & Discussed at InspectApedia.com@Margot D,

From the commodity above nosotros accept this note:

Equally a general rule of thumb, electric motor start capacitors can be replaced with a micro-farad or µF or mfd rating equal to or upwards to 20% higher µF than the original capacitor serving the motor. On the replacement capacitor the voltage rating must be equal to or greater than the original.

That'south about a x uf departure from the high-finish of your stock motor cap, so you could try a capacitor that puts out up to 62 uf 250VAC

For case this capacitor (shown below) sold past grainger.com is described as

Also check out the caption of capacitor voltage likewise discussed in the commodity above. You should agree that the 330V is simply an upper limit.

Alternate size kickoff capacitor for roof height Air-conditioning fan motor?

Hi, I currently take a 43-52 microfarad 250 VAC outset capacitor that I need to supplant (AC starts and gets cold but fan does not turn on). This type of capacitor is sold out everywhere (or long atomic number 82 times). What other size capacitor tin I look for to start a 1/5 HP, 1650 RPM, 3 speed, 115 Volt, two.5 Amp fan motor(Century ORV4540)?

Thanks! Margot

On 2021-07-07 by (modernistic) - How does the start capacitor get turned off when the motor has reached its rated speed?

@How start capacitor working,

Thanks for your helpful question that I'd re-phrase as

How does the start capacitor go turned off when the motor has reached its rated speed?

Respond:
On many motors a centrifugal switch congenital into the motor and held closed by springs keeps the commencement capacitor in the motor power circuit until the motor has reached its rated speed.

At that signal the rotating speed of the motor is sufficient to open the centrifugal switch against its spring pressure, thus taking the starting capacitor out of the circuit, leaving the run capacitor in apply.

To give you an idea what the centrifugal switch looks-like, below nosotros evidence a Speedaire (brand) Centrifugal Switch Set Mfr #: PN22N031G as listed for sale at Zoro.com, Zoro #: G8641053

@Thomas,

To select a start/run capacitor for an erstwhile AC unit when the values of the original capacitor are non legible,

A service tech might utilise the capacitor choice rough guidelines similar those above on this page, or

consult the service manual for the compressor/condenser unit that may give the exact OEM specification, or

she might give Ruud service a call - for which i needs just what y'all have on that service tag: the Ruud A/C model no. UND-030JBZ
and they may want its serial number

Hullo experts!

I'm looking for a dual capacitor replacement for an former RUUD AC compressor model UAND-030-JBZ, the serial number start with 7259.
The capacitor'due south housing is in plastic and the specs (etched) disappeared over fourth dimension, so I have no idea which capacitor I should order.
:(

I'1000 attaching an image of the compressor's specs if information technology helps.

Thank you for your help!

@Ted Chase,

Please check the motor capacitor size full general guidelines and tables in the article above.

A 0.74 Amp electric motor, 120V, unmarried stage, with a typical power gene of 0.9 is microscopic: its horsepower calculates (using a typical online amps to horsepower calculator) to near 0.096 hp - or most a one/x HP motor.

What size capacitor is required to run a 115VAC, .74amp motor

@Tim,

Your photo was a flake blurry so I tin can't come across whether it has two terminals or three.

I mention this because if in that location were three terminals than the capacitor would be a dual role get-go and run cap.

I can tell you that depending on the size of your motor, the 30 microfarad rating that shows in your photograph might be used in a starting cap - for instance on an air conditioner motor or on a pump.

Run capacitors for such motors generally would use a smaller number every bit you'll come across in the capacitor selection tables above.

I have a 1.v hp jacuzzi hot tub pump. The motor hums just wont start. I check the shaft and that spins freely. I'chiliad guessing capacitor. Information technology simply has one and its located on height of the meter. Is that a start capacitor or run.

@nkatu30, I don't have an authoritative answer

but it seems to me that as the motor'southward basic mass and windings oasis't inverse you'd need the aforementioned sized cap; typically in motor capacitor specifications the voltage range given is a condom upper limit and it's ok to utilize, for instance, an XXufd starter cap or run cap rated for 380V on a 240V application.

Shown is a Round Motor Run Capacitor,30 Microfarad Rating, 370-440VAC Voltage from Titan

I want to catechumen a iii stage (380V) compressor motor into single phase (240V).
What is the correct capacitor size to utilize?

@Devan,

Sure, glad to help.

You lot may have made the very common error of thinking that to replace a motor capacitor you have to buy the exact brand and shape as the original. Yous don't.

Cardinal is the capacitor rating - yours is 35uf or 35 microfarads - probably this is a motor run capacitor.

All of the data for your motor capacitor is written out as: 35uf +-five% (tolerance), 240V, fifty/60 Hz. You'll read in the article above that a suitable match that's 35uf will be ok even if it'south voltage rating is higher (as that'southward but a prophylactic upper limit);

The shape of the capacitor isn't critical, though it'd be nice if it would fit where the original did; if it won't it can exist mounted and wired from outside the space used by the original capacitor.

The cap you want is available from any electric supplier, motor repair shop, or HVAC supplier, and too from many online vendors, even large Amazon.

Below is an case, a QH QX6535 35uf Capacitor Motor Run Circular 35 uF MFD 370V HVAC as shown at Amazon.

Please also take a look at the electric motor capacitor selection advice to a higher place on this page.

I accept been looking all over for a replacement to this capacitor 35/5 240V, just to no avail. It is for a Leeson ane/2 hp greenhouse exhaust fan motor. Exercise know where I can find one? Cheers.

@Anonymous,

Not likely, anon; have a look through the motor start capacitor selection advice in the article above and you'll run into typical motor start capacitor ratings in uF and voltage for motors of diverse horsepower or size.

Can i use 10 MFD capacitor as outset capacitor

@Sal Licata, I doubtable that the "5904708 MFD" is either a misprint or a mixup of part number and MFD value. A ane.8 HP motor would typically employ a starting capacitor somewhat smaller than 105-126 µF / 220VAC (Don't fret the voltage; these capacitor values and their sources are found in tables above on this page)

The breaker trip could be due to a non-starting motor due to a bad cap equally you've diagnosed, but be alert for a motor with failing bearings or a shorted winding besides. The fact that your motor starts to rotate and and then trips the breaker argues for a motor failure, perhaps a winding that shorts when the motor gets to speed or simply a bad bearing, giving the motor-rotation resistance that soon causes an over-current.

I accept a 2 capactor 1.8 hp 120 volt motor on an old ridgid air compressor . I'yard dislocated nearly the values on a black plastic round cap that has 5904708 mfd 125 vac 60 hz and has ii terminals .I did not run across whatever thing like this on your web site .What do I take to do to replace this. I ohmed it and it comes upward ( 0 ) I think that say'southward it's open circuit . The trouble I have is the the motor runs 5 seconds and cuts off and pops a breaker . Tin can you lot help me.

Hi I got this cost pump motor that's a three-phase on my inquiry says I tin can catechumen it to unmarried phase only I need to know what size capacitor. And practise I need a stat capacitor and a run capacitor? See the PDF

@Paul,

thank you for the helpful feedback-follow-upward;

Sometimes all we need is a new start/run capacitor;

but be warned that sometimes the failed cap is a telltale that the real consequence is a failing motor - such equally due to a bad bearing. Go on me posted.

Hi, Dan. Pitiful for the delay in responding. Got slammed with work; I finally was able to get the washer up and exist able to become at the motor, transmission, capacitor, etc. Checked the transmission, turns smoothly and effortlessly. Motor is fine. Replaced the capacitor as nosotros talked about earlier-was able to zilch tie the new, cylindrical one to the original mounting bracket of the old box shaped i and started washing a full load. I watched it through the showtime cycle, and when the spin bicycle started, it kinda of stumbled before the motor kicked. It connected to drain and spin later on until the 'unbalanced' notification stopped it.

I had to re-level the clothes twice, then reset the controls to spin only; this time, the motor kicked in almost immediately and finished the cycle without a hitch. I likewise monitored the control panel/circuit lath temp. as it would very noticeably get quite warm a few minutes subsequently starting the washer (with the original capacitor)

. With the new one installed, there was a just the slightest sensation/feeling of warmth, just nothing compared to the original. Let's hope this turns out to be a successful prepare for the trouble. Thanks for your insight and aid with this! I'll proceed you notified if anything else happens.

Cheers, I will as soon equally I can go full admission to the 'innards'... ;)

Be sure we've not missed a begetting somewhere else such as in the tub assembly.

Also you may exist able to cheque the motor remotely by checking its current draw.

Thanks for the quick response, Dan! The symptom that leads me to the capacitor is a failure for the washer to spin/drain in the last part of the wheel...turning off the power and shutting off the billow, and then waiting 30-45 minutes to allows it to cool off enough to re-appoint and bleed and spin finer. I recently replaced the drain motor (cleaved impeller) and drive motor, but problem still exists.

Strong electrical smell of something overheating coming from the area of the capacitor. The location of the washer prohibits quick access to the motor/mechanical interior of machine to check/feel what is overheating. I'll supervene upon the capacitor and report back in the about future as to whether or not this works. Thank you again!

Paul:

Normally information technology is absolutely reasonable to replace a motor start or run capacitor with another one of the same specifications in voltage and capacitance - as we draw above on this folio.

Sometimes there is a physical "fit" problem that an original cap fit into a special and odd space where its replacement, that may exist different in size or shape, is not and so comfortable.

But nonsense: capacitors are connected by wires. If a cap doesn't fit in its one-time cubby, as long as it can be safely secured and protected from harm and thence continued to the motor it serves, it ought to be fine.

It may exist that whomever spoke with y'all doesn't desire to crawl out on the limb of common sense, having perhaps Liticaphobia.

Watch out: Keep in mind that if a motor capacitor burnt up because of an underlying trouble with a motor that'due south expressionless or dying or dangerous wiring, replacing the capacitor won't address the motor and fire-rubber concerns.

You lot might enquire that person

ane. What's the technical or safety objection to replacing the GE OEM washing machine capacitor with a replacement unit of equivalent value in volts and farads

and depending on that answer,

ii. Inquire that person to review the costs of spending other people's money for the person's peace of heed.

Or give out a copy of

inspectapedia.com/home_inspection/Other_Peoples_Money.php OTHER PEOPLE's Coin

Tin I use a replacement capacitor for a GE washing machine even though the original is no longer produced? I volition post pics of the original (w/specs) forth with a possible replacement. GE says the capacitor is model specific, just the replacement is from GE and is exactly the same specs and is used in later on units with the same motor. Thanks!

A reasonable guess is that the motor that is trying to start is failing, maybe with a bad bearing or burnt winding and information technology is drawing High electric current

I find burnt connections on the start capacitor. Looks every bit though the start terminal was over heated. I cant figure out why.

CIMA Tavernelle Motori Elettrici Tavernelle VI electric motor data tag (C) InspectApedia.com MogmatMogamat

The CAV on the data plate of this Italian motor from Tavernelle indicates that information technology'south a five.5 hp motor.

Typically the run capacitor on a v hp. motor is effectually xxx µF - 40 µF 370VAC

Typically the start capacitor for a 5 hp motor is effectually 600uF

To accept a stab at answering "how to catechumen a 3 phase motor to run on single phase ability" I found a variety of answers ranging from "it's easy" to "it's a really bad idea, even dangerous".

Kemet (cited in the guidebooks given in the article above) notes: By connecting a capacitor to the two phases it is possible to make a three-phase motor piece of work every bit a single-phase motor.

Sentinel out: you cannot simply claw upwards a three phase motor arbitrarily to single stage electric current; you need to review the wiring recommendations from motor companies or engineers.

Options include:

A phase shift capacitor;

Motor re-winding

Using a VFD or variable frequency drive

Employ a converter to catechumen your single phase power to DC (Direct Electric current) and and so use an inverter to power the motor. From what I read this is your best bet. Every bit ane EE notes "You can run a iii stage motor from single phase by converting the unmarried phase AC-DC(rectification) and then DC-Air conditioning(3 phase inverter)."

However pretty much everyone says this is an inefficient way to run a motor - i.e. your electric bill will be higher than necessary.

On Quora a Mumbai writer recommended:

Use capacitor of say 36 / 72 / 108 mfd 440 V rating.

Depending upon motor rating. Connect one end of this capacitor to open up unconnected terminal of motor.

The other terminal of capacitors tin be connected to one of the two live phases, and the motor volition outset running.

If you modify over the capacitor terminal to other phase , its direction of rotation will get reversed.

This organisation is routinely used in Bharat particularly in rural areas for running of pumps.

This arrangement is certainly not the optimum for the motor, and the phase difference betwixt the windings will differ from 120 degrees needed.

However, this does makes the motor starting time and save the day for farmers when 3 phase supply is not available. - www.quora.com/How-do-I-run-a-iii-stage-motor-in-a-unmarried-phase-line-using-a-capacitor

Reader Question: benefactor says the club of numbers on the capacitor doesn't thing

6/sixteen/2014 Danno said:

I'one thousand replacing the capacitor in my AC condenser. The original/stock unit says 35/v 440 AC. This is the cap I ordered from a distributor, just upon receiving it, the box says "five/35 440" (the v and 35 are transposed. Distributor says its the aforementioned thing. Is this correct? Cheers for any 411

Respond:

Danno I think the scrambled order is not an issue as long as the key numbers on the capacitor match its application or match the old i AND every bit long as you connect the proper wires.

Example start/run capacitor markings

(Non specifying your particular capacitor)

  • Voltage, e.g. 110-125V
  • Capacitance, e.g. 189-227 µF or micro Farads or MFD (Start capacitors usually are over 60 µF)
  • Capacitance, e.g. for a dual run capacitor: 35/5 refers to 35 MFD (for a compressor) and v MFD (for a fan motor)
  • Temperature range, e.g. -forty - + 65C
  • Cycles, due east.thousand. 50-sixty Hz

Decode a 35/five/440 marking on a motor starting capacitor

Reader Mark (18 June 2014) has given us a helpful and detailed translation of the markings found on beginning capacitors, repeated here:

Run capacitors: I ever was taught that 35/5 was a [dual] run capacitor. 35 is the microfarad rating for the compressor & five microfarad was for the fan. (3 terminals) not:

Decode a 35/5/440 marking on a motor starting capacitor:

The capacitor y'all are describing marked 35/5 440 is probably a dual run capacitor.

35/5 : The offset ii numbers are the capacitance 35 µF (for the compressor) and 5 µF (for the fan motor).

A dual "run capacitor" supports two electrical motors, such as in large air conditioner or heat pump units, with both a fan motor and a compressor motor.

It saves infinite by combining two physical capacitors into ane case. The dual capacitor has 3 terminals labeled

"C",

"FAN", and

"HERM", which stand for the Common, Fan, and HERMetically sealed compressor.[5]

440 refers to the ability to run voltages up to 440VAC

Dual run capacitors come in a variety of sizes, depending on the capacitance (µF), such equally twoscore plus 5 µF, and also the voltage. (Exist sure to connect properly to compressor motor, fan motor and mutual)

A 440 volt capacitor can be used in place of a 370 volt, but not a 370 in identify of a 440 volt.[two]

The capacitance must stay the same within 5% of its original value.[two]

Round cylinder-shaped dual run capacitors are usually used for air workout, to help in the starting of the compressor and the condenser fan motor.[two]

An oval dual run capacitor could be used instead of a round capacitor, merely the mounting strap should exist changed to better fit the oval shape

Watch out: Take a look at the wiring sheet that should be with your capacitor or wiring marked on the device itself to be sure that you lot are properly connecting the Start and Run wires and you'll be OK.

Equally we noted in the article above, the dual capacitor terminals may be labeled so that the 3 leads can be wired correctly:

  • Southward = start wire connector
  • R = Run wire connector
  • C = mutual connector

Reader Question: your capacitor advice is all Greek to me

Four ways to find a matching or replacement motor capacitor are given at CAPACITOR SELECTION TIPS in this article.

Likewise if you tin can, transport me some sharp photos of the cap and its markings and I may be able to annotate farther. Mail a photo of your existing motor capacitor and its markings at the page lesser comments box, or use the page top or bottom CONTACT link.

Yuhchang 30uf 250VAC motor start capacitor (C) Inspectapedia.com SP

OK so nosotros know this is probably merely a single-purpose motor-start capacitor, since starting capacitors are near-often 125, 165, 250 and 330 volt devices while run capacitors are rated for higher levels like 370 and 440 volts. If it were a dual-purpose capacitor you'd see 3 rather than simply 2 terminals.

You lot'll have no trouble buying a replacement at your local electrical supplier or even from an online supplier. Prices for a motor capacitor starting time at under $10. U.S.

Ask for a xxx microfarad 250VAC motor start capacitor. Take forth the one-time sick i to show your supplier.
